    PERSONAL STATEMENT:

As a radiologist, educator and scientist, I have been serving the radiological community at local, regional and international levels for more than 25 years. Over the last 10 years, I played numerous leadership roles in radiology, the foremost among them the membership of the ESR Executive Council.
I was born and educated in a social and geographical environment that featured the values worthy of a location at the crossroads of cultures and civilizations. With this background, I have had great satisfaction in serving the ESR, which embraces all cultures and diversities in our profession.
As the elected head of the radiology department of one of the leading medical schools of my country, I cherish every day the great privilege and benefit of working with a highly competitive, productive and successful faculty as well as serving as an educator for a top-scoring, bright group of residents and students.

My major professional goals have always been two-fold: to invest in education and to increase the visibility of radiology. The opportunity to work with many national and international pillars of radiology during my professional career rendered invaluable experience in attaining my goals. My long-term role in the program planning committees of several ECRs and chairing the European Training Assessment Programme have provided me, among other things, deep insights into education, teamwork and arbitration. In an era mostly characterised by fast-paced technological progress, I plan to increase the visibility of radiology as a problem-solving and value-based profession—an essential part of the multidisciplinary management of healthcare. I would consider it a great honour to serve this society.

    Personal Statement

The ESR is a hugely influential international society; keeping it strong, representative of all European radiologists, capable of responding to the issues facing all member countries, matters greatly. My professional career, working in large countries and small, has afforded me the privilege of understanding the cultural and professional diversites of Europe, Ireland, North America and the Middle East. I have extensive practice experience in a smaller European country, with a healthcare system sharing many of the good and bad features of systems elsewhere. Healthcare systems differ, but, large or small, well-funded or resource-starved, radiologists’ goals are the same: provision of high-quality, safe care for our patients. Through my ESR involvement, and my research and publishing interests in professional matters affecting radiology practice, I understand the issues affecting our working lives, and have contributed to assisting European colleagues to meet the demands of regulation, legislation and new developments.

Radiology faces challenges and threats, from other specialties, from healthcare funders (who don’t always understand its complexity), and from technologies that seek to diminish or replace our role. It is a great honour for me to be considered as a candidate for ESR 2nd. Vice President. If elected, I pledge to devote my attention to ensuring ESR is relevant to individual radiologists across the wide variety of countries and healthcare systems which form our membership, keeping members up-to-date with changing technologies and regulations, providing educational support for future generations, and protecting and developing our specialty.

My diverse roles (radiologist, examiner, academic, executive, researcher) have prepared me to represent you, to listen to you and to act on your behalf as 2nd. Vice President.

    Personal Statement:

Radiology is the most dynamic and rapidly evolving medical specialty, being at the same time a great challenge and pleasure to be involved in. My career began at a large multiprofile university hospital in my home town Plovdiv. Over the years the specialization in my country and abroad and especially the involvement in ESR structures has served as a tremendous push in my professional development. It has been an honor for me to participate in the ESR, ESOR, ESR Committees’ activities over the years and to represent this largest multinational radiological society in the world. As part of the ESR Committee of Communication and External Affairs I had the opportunity to interact with colleagues from around the world, discuss common issues and work together to increase the visibility of radiology and its potential for development. Working with patient organizations within the ESR-PAG have helped to formulate our priorities, aimed at providing the most efficient, effective, safe and accurate imaging modality according to the needs of each patient.

I am truly honoured to be part of the Executive Council of ESR and I hope to continue my work as Chair of the Committee of Communication and External Affairs.

    RESEARCH SUMMARY

My H-index is 52 (Sum of times cited: 10.488). Supported by 5 active grants and documented by 377 papers, my research is focused on advanced imaging in epilepsy, neurodegenerative disease and psychiatric disorders. I have a strong collaboration with other medical and engineering specialities. In epilepsy, my research has been focused on understanding the cerebral networks involved in the seizure origin and propagation using advanced images such as EEG-fMR, structural and functional connectivity and ASL. My goal in this investigation line is to find clinical diagnostic tools based on imaging that would help in localizing the seizure onset and improve the surgical target. (Epilepsy, 2009, Neuroimage 2011, Epilepsia 2013, European Journal of Neurology 2016). In neurodegenerative disease, my line of interest is to look for neurodegenerative biomarkers using advanced MR techniques that could be easily applicable in clinical environment (ALFA study and BBHI) (Neuroimage clinic 2019 Brain 2019). I have also participated in a large study related to Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative risks. Finally, in psychiatric disorders, my research has been focused on improving the understanding of the physiopathology of mental health disorders, with a particular focus in child and adolescent mental disorders. (J Am Acad Child Adolesc, Psychiatry. 2017).

I have been participating in several joint international research initiatives such ENIGMA in epilepsy, OCD, anorexia, ADHD and psychosis; GENFI for frontotemporal dementia and MELT for epilepsy, that sharing of analysed data is allowing to understand better these diseases.

    Personal Statement

As a board member of the Spanish Society of Neuroradiologist, I have been very active in promoting the standardization reports in neuroradiology. I have promoted the creation of working groups to establish standardized reports in different disease with the idea to discuss them in the Annual Meeting of the Society and to reach a broad consensus.
As a member of the diagnostic committee of the ESNR, I have been participating in working groups in dementia and tumours to establish a recommendation for standardized acquisition protocol (Dementia imaging in clinical practice: a European-wide survey of 193 centres and conclusions by the ESNR working group. Neuroradiology, 2019 and Glioma imaging in Europe: A survey of 220 centres and recommendations for best clinical practice. Eur Radiol. 2018) and I am leading a working group in standardizing language fMRI in epilepsy.
I also have participated in a European project Pharamacog that has work in standardizing advanced techniques for multicenter studies (Hum Brain Mapp. 2017 and 2015 and Neuroimage 2016, 2014, 2014).
I have been very active in participating in various aspects of safety and quality relevant to a department and to radiology in general.

As the appointed coordinator of the Magnetic Resonance Image core facility at IDIBAPS I have established a post in Control Quality to ensure that all the Clinical research that includes MR acquisition to post- processing analysis are conducted safely and at the highest quality. This position gave me the opportunity to address general and specific research quality and safety needs from the perspective of radiology and beyond.

It is with this background that I am seeking the ESR members’ support for the Chair of the ESR Quality, Safety and Standards Committee.

    Personal Statement

Since I have a great interest in the strategic development of Radiology and the future success of our specialty, the tasks and responsibilities of the advertised position of the ESR Quality, Safety and Standards Committee Chair appeal to me very much. Based on my curriculum, I strongly believe that I would well qualify for this position: I have management andleadership experience as department chair for 15 years, also serving as a member of the Executive Board of our hospital.
I have a high academic reputation and clinical expertise in the field of female imaging. As listed above, I have a longstanding history with ESR and its subspecialty organizations ESUR and, to an albeit lesser extent, EUSOBI. Due to my involvement with ESR/ECR, but also other professional organizations (SGR-SSR, IDKD, School of MRI of the ESMRMB, IBUS, Swiss Society of Senology, IS3R), I have an excellent national and international network in our field. I have very good communication and organizational skills (having successfully organized many radiological courses and meetings). Since I have decided to resign from my position as Deputy Editor of European Radiology in 2020, having completed a term of 8 years, I would not only have the necessary time but would especially also love to further contribute to the success of our European Society.
I would be honoured and delighted to serve as Chair for this important committee and to support the ongoing and future initiatives.

    Personal Statement

Radiology is certainly one of the most versatile and fascinating subjects in medicine. The further development of radiology takes place on many levels. The development and introduction of new imaging techniques is, of course, a central part of this. At the same time, radiology has a great potential to improve the quality of health care as a whole and thus to prove its value by considering the aspects of diagnostic pathways, treatment procedures, the optimization of image quality and radiation protection, the further development of evidence-based indications, structured documentation and the communication with referring physicians, as well as the patients themselves. The ESR is the largest radiological and one of the most important scientific societies internationally. In my opinion, the exchange on these topics at an European level and a cooperation with the aim of further developing of standards is an important task and opportunity for the ESR. Particularly with regard to current developments in image processing and evaluation (e.g. Radiomics, Artificial Intelligence), criteria for quality assurance and standardization are of particular importance. Based on my previous activities in the ESR, which are closely related to standardization, radiation protection or quality aspects, I have gained a lot of experience in the European landscape. In the context of my long-standing activities for the ESR, it would therefore be a great honour for me to serve as Chair of the Quality, Safety and Standards Committee for the ESR and its members.

    Personal Statement

I remain very grateful to the ESR that assigned me the « GE William D. Coolidge Innovation Grant » in 2003.

This scholarship allowed me to spend 1 year in the Max-Planck Institute of Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences of Leipzig in Germany. This outstanding experience has improved my skills in scientific methodology, image analysis, statistics, and computer coding. Since then, I am much more aware of potentials and limitations of advanced imaging techniques.

This ESR support also considerably strengthened my motivation to pursue an academic career. Then, I chose to move from Paris to the University Hospital of Grenoble in 2004 where a vigorous MR research in neuro has been conducted since decades by excellent research teams.

Besides my personal medical and academic activities, I headed the Neuroradiology Department of the University Hospital of Grenoble. I am still heading the MR research platform of Grenoble. I have actively empowered my colleagues to develop and conduct original researches, including head and neck imaging, percutaneous pain management, and cognitive neurosciences, offering exciting results in research and human management.

At the national level, I was very involved in the French Society of Neuroradiology (SFNR) that I headed during the achievement of the mechanical thrombectomy. My work has reinforced the unity of neuroradiologists and radiologists to face organizational and educational challenges. I also created an original session during the annual congress of SFNR entitled “SFNR loves Europe”. This session has allowed to meet and share the expertise of European leaders in neuroradiology. As president of the annual congress of SFNR in 2019, I further increased our European relationships by organizing 2 sessions “SFNR loves Europe” in both diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology, and the 1st SFNR-DGNR Stroke Course with our German colleagues.

At the European level, I was recently appointed Chair of the Subspecialties and Allied Sciences (SSAS) Committee after the resignation of Prof. A. Gangi. During the last months, I appreciated the impressive commitment and achievements of the presidents of all European SSAS societies, ESR board of directors, and ESR office. The vitality of the radiological galaxy is inspiring. Indeed, the European SSAS societies raised various hot topics, dealing mainly with medical practice, medical organization and management, initial and ongoing education, research and innovation, including AI. First innovative ideas arose from fruitful discussions that I am eager to share and fully support. And I am sure that the ESR would consider several initiatives using the ECR, its journals, its website, and even new tools that could be further developed.

Now, I need your vote to pursue my involvement as Chair of the Subspecialties and Allied Sciences Committee to promote your expertise within the large radiological community. Being more tightly involved in the ESR leadership would be a wonderful opportunity to honor my commitments to the success of Radiology in Europe.
